Untitled (handkerchief), 2008 - my take on the expression : "if I am not for myself who will be " from a quote by Hillel the Elder who said : "If I am not for myself, who will be [for me]? And when I am for myself, what am 'I'? And if not now, when?".

in Hebrew it sounds: im (if) ein (no or none or is not) ani (me) li (to me or for me) mi (who)li (is for me or to me) -

when embroidered so close, it may be read as : ima ein ani li mi li, or ima ein, ani li mi li. which can mean: without my mother who will be for me, or lacking a mother who will be for me.
