Untitled (shelter) 2006, mixed media, 8’ x 8’x8’
The structure is a combination of a shelter- a common underground haven, which holds a very masculine role of protection, and a laundry room – a rooftop structure, associated with service and feminine domestic chores.
Hard on the outside and soft on the inside – this structure gives a false illusion of safety, stability and comfort –
The structure’s materials, dimension and shape, suggests impermanence. The pillows – a padded inner layer; usually serve a need for comfort and sleep -suggesting congestion and mass. Its scale, walls width (following domestic bomb shelters standards) and location suggest susceptibility.
A shelter is where one descends for protection; the roof is where one ascends for freedom. – This structure combines the two, connecting them with the sky.
Initially created for Double Exposure, a group show curated by Block Magazine.
